Great design needs to do more than just look good. It needs to communicate something, capture attention and give people a reason to remember it. The challenge is finding the right balance between all of those things without sacrificing one for another.
Whether we’re working on business branding, a campaign, website or any other piece of graphic design, that balance is something we’re constantly considering. How do you make something clear enough that people immediately understand it, but different enough that it doesn’t blend in with everything else?
One of the biggest challenges with graphic design for businesses is finding the middle ground between being too abstract and too literal. If you push a concept too far creatively, you risk losing the message completely. It might be visually interesting, but if your audience has no idea what you’re trying to communicate, the design isn’t doing its job.
On the other hand, being too literal can create the opposite problem. The message might be clear, but there’s nothing distinctive about it. When businesses in the same industry are communicating similar products, services and messages, taking the obvious creative route can quickly result in everyone looking the same.
Great design sits somewhere between the two. It should be easy enough to understand while still having the personality and originality needed to stand apart from competitors.
Design is ultimately another way of communicating with your audience. Your brand identity, website, campaign creative, packaging and social content are all telling people something about your business before they’ve necessarily read a word or spoken to anyone from your team.
That’s why graphic design for businesses shouldn’t start with simply asking, “What will look good?” You need to understand what you’re trying to communicate, who you’re communicating with and what you want them to take away from it. From there, decisions around typography, colour, imagery and layout can support that message rather than distract from it.
A strong visual identity makes that communication more consistent as well. When the same thinking carries across different touchpoints, people begin to recognise the business and understand what the brand represents. That’s where design starts contributing to brand recognition rather than existing as a collection of individual graphics.
Communication is only one side of great design. The other is how it makes someone feel. Design has the ability to make something feel premium, playful, established, exciting, familiar or completely unexpected. Those reactions influence the way people perceive a business, often before they know much else about it.
That emotional connection doesn’t need to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply creating enough curiosity for someone to stop scrolling, pick something up, click through or take a second look. When the message is clear and the creative gives people something to connect with, design has a much better chance of actually being remembered.
There isn’t one particular style or formula that makes great design. What works for one business could be completely wrong for another. It comes back to finding the balance between communication and creativity, making sure people understand what you’re trying to say while giving them something distinctive enough to notice.
As a creative agency in Wollongong, that’s what we’re looking for when approaching graphic design and branding. The goal isn’t to make something different purely for the sake of being different, or to make something so obvious that it disappears amongst its competitors. Great design should communicate effectively, create a connection and still find a way to cut through.

We had such a great experience working with Unknown Group to build READY-You. They really listened to what we were trying to achieve, understood the purpose behind the project, and turned our ideas and co-design feedback into an incredibly impressive digital program. The team was professional, responsive and genuinely collaborative throughout the whole process. What impressed me most was how well they listened and then actually implemented the feedback — not just technically, but in a way that stayed true to what young people told us they needed. We now have a really engaging and professional READY-You platform that we can take forward into user testing with young people experiencing mental ill-health. It has been very cool seeing something that started as an idea and a co-design process become a real, usable program. A fantastic team to work with and an exciting result!Posted on Google![]()

The team at Unknown Group have been absolutely incredible to work with. As a not-for-profit event, we truly value people who take the time to understand our vision and from day one the team at Unknown Group have felt like an extension of our own team. They haven't just provided a service, they've taken the time to understand what Red's Backyard Ultra is all about, the community behind it and what we're trying to achieve both now and into the future. They have produced outstanding video content, helped design a special edition shirt for our Silver Ticket event and the Australian Team shirt for when we host the Australian Team at the 2026 Backyard Ultra World Team Championships. They have also helped us better understand social media and marketing, providing valuable guidance, fresh ideas and strategic input that has helped us strengthen our brand and tell our story more effectively. The quality of their work is exceptional, but what stands out even more is their passion, creativity and willingness to go above and beyond. Their support has extended well beyond the projects they've delivered. They are currently assisting us with event coverage, sponsorship initiatives and future marketing projects and their enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment have been evident every step of the way. What I appreciate most is that nothing ever feels transactional. They genuinely want to see their clients succeed and invest the time and energy to help make that happen. Their communication is excellent, they're easy to work with and they consistently deliver above expectations. We're incredibly grateful for everything Unknown Group has done for Red's Backyard Ultra so far. Their support, expertise and belief in our event have made a genuine difference and we're excited to continue building our relationship as we work together to bring this year's Red's Backyard Ultra and the Australian Team's journey to life. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a creative, professional and genuinely invested marketing and media team.Posted on Google![]()

Unknown Group's web team is outstanding. We have been working with them for several years and during that time there has never been an instance where they couldn't bring an idea to life or fix a problem. They can do everything for you but if you prefer they can show you how to make basic edits. Amoni Liddell is our point of contact. Her skills are impressive, customer service is exceptional, and we have complete confidence in anything she does for us. Highly recommended.Posted on Google![]()
