Want a Career in Marketing? Read This First.

This one’s not for business owners. It’s for the people looking to get into marketing.

We get a lot of enquiries from graduates wanting a job in the industry, but with little to no real-world experience. Most are unsure where to start, and that’s understandable.

If you want to get into the industry, you need to start getting real-life experience.

That doesn’t mean waiting for someone to hire you. It means creating. Film your friends. Capture your holidays, nights out, local events, anything worth documenting. Practice writing copy. Play around with editing and design. Start your own Instagram page and treat it like a brand. Build something from scratch. Test ideas. Try to grow it. Learn what works and what doesn’t.

Then take it a step further and put yourself out there. Walk into your local café and ask if you can film a few reels for them for free. Do the same at your favourite restaurant. Offer to help small businesses with their content, their socials, or their campaigns. The worst they can say is no. The best case is you start building real experience.

This is exactly how Unknown Group started.

When COVID hit, Trent and Lee were out of work. Instead of waiting around, they walked into local cafés and restaurants and offered to help them adjust their messaging and marketing during restrictions. That experience turned into relationships, and those relationships turned into a business.

Over time, that becomes your portfolio. Not just a CV, but proof that you can actually execute and understand how things work in the real world.

Curiosity matters just as much.

Ask why something performed well. Ask why it flopped. Look at the data. Question decisions. Marketing isn’t just creativity, it’s thinking and problem solving.

Most importantly, understand this: no one is coming to hand you experience.

You don’t wait until you get hired to start acting like a marketer, you start now. If you want in, start acting like you’re already in.
